Blackness: Love, Joy, and America

Black History is American History.jpg

“Black History is American History”

“It should never be separate. The energy and practices of our ancestors are so vibrant and running through every vein of this country. I am American. I am Black. I am American. I am Black. I am something the flag won’t reveal. Something more. Something special. I am braided into the foundation of this place. You can’t remove me even if I ever decide to remove myself. I am this country. I am Black. Black history is American history.” -Lyschel shipp

“Edges Laid”

Edges are the quintessential indicator of confident, braggadocious, sophisticated, beautiful Black hair. “Edges laid” is a communal phrase. It’s celebratory. A compliment. An affirmation. To use it, is to understand its intricacy—the patience and skill it takes to swerve soft hairs beneath the bristle of a toothbrush. In this set of photos, I wanted the title “edges laid” to embody the beauty of Black hair—the nuances in hair types, curl patterns, and the secrets we share in hair struggle and hair love. Edges laid is such a joyous phrase—it’s how we acknowledge each other in our commonalities—it’s how we love each other and ourselves.

Fly sneakers will always be a part of the culture. It’s who we are. It’s been the talk on the block, a staple of hip-hop, and a lucrative business. I’ve known friends and family members who have camped out in long lines for new kicks or others who had a *plug. In Black culture sneakers are conversation starters. They’re a part of the fit, but also a part of the culture.

*Plug- a person who can supply you at any moment with goods that you need.

Other themes represented in this collection include: [Black] JOY, solidarity, friendship, family, hair, excellence, and literature….and most of all, as it lingers through the intention of every photo, Black Love—as an inalienable right, a necessity, and a declaration of beauty as we take up space. (The full collection has not been included here. All photos in this collection were taken by Lyschel Shipp).
